Hydrogen Methane Testing
Background
Hydrogen Methane Breath Tests are non-invasive way to detect if someone has Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth or Carbohydrate Malabsorption (lactose, fructose).
If you are considering doing the hydrogen methane breath test, please ensure that you have considered if you have other conditions that may be causing your symptoms such as the ones given below.
- having an inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Collits or even cancer.
· Symptoms begin at age 50 or older
· Change in symptoms
· Progression of symptoms
· Unexplained weight loss
· Blood in the stool
· Diarrhea that interferes with sleep
· Abnormal physical examination (such as a mass) or lab result (such as iron deficiency anemia

Treatment may include adjusting medications. For example, people with Crohns Disease can have IBS or SIBO. So the medications for these need to be adjusted by your GP/Specialist to avoid further problems.
